A serious case of alleged nursing home neglect has emerged, highlighting the critical importance of care standards in such facilities. Tyrone Raines filed a complaint against Egret Cove Rehabilitation Center, LLC, doing business as Egret Cove Center, on October 21, 2024, in the Circuit Court of the Sixth Judicial Circuit in Pinellas County, Florida.
The complaint details how Raines was admitted to Egret Cove Center on November 7, 2022, for rehabilitation and wound care following a surgical procedure. During his stay at the facility, Raines allegedly suffered from inadequate care that led to severe pain and suffering. The plaintiff accuses Egret Cove Center of failing to provide necessary medical treatments as prescribed by St. Anthony’s Hospital upon his admission and subsequent readmission after surgery on April 26, 2023. According to the filing, "EGRET COVE CENTER failed to provide cefepime on numerous occasions as well as failed to provide adequate wound treatment every day per shift as prescribed by the hospital discharge notes."
Raines' attorney claims that this negligence resulted in further infection and complications due to resistant bacteria. The complaint alleges that Egret Cove Center's failure to follow proper discharge instructions directly contributed to these adverse outcomes. Furthermore, it accuses the facility of negligent hiring practices and understaffing for financial gain, which jeopardized patient safety and violated several statutory obligations under Florida law.
The lawsuit seeks damages exceeding $50,000 for the alleged violations of residents' rights under Chapter 400 of Florida Statutes and other relevant laws. The plaintiff is also demanding a jury trial and additional relief deemed appropriate by the court.
Representing Tyrone Raines is Mariela Cano from Your Insurance Attorney PLLC based in Coconut Grove, Florida. The case is presided over by Judge Ken Burke with Case ID: 24-004596-CI.
