TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection is facing civil charges from a Columbia County man who says he slipped on an algae-covered sidewalk at Ichetucknee Springs State Park and sustained serious permanent injuries.

According to documents filed in the Leon County Circuit Court on Feb. 17, Josen Vega of Lake City was walking toward the Ichetucknee Springs swimming area when he slipped on the algae and sustained a severe back injury.

The plaintiff alleges the defendant's negligence through failure to inspect the walkway for hazardous conditions and slip hazards, failing to warn patrons of slip hazards and neglecting to fix unsafe conditions.

Vega is seeking compensation for his injuries exceeding $35,000 in one count of negligence. He submitted a Notice of Claim to the defendant on June 23, 2020; the appropriate amount of time has passed for Vega to bring suit against the defendant.

Vega is represented by Morgan and Morgan PLLC of Gainesville.
