North Florida Shipyards says crew to blame for damaging dry dock

Tugboat 01

JACKSONVILLE — A dry dock owner is suing Mobro Marine Inc. and Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company LLC, operators, citing alleged negligence.

North Florida Shipyards Inc. filed a complaint on Oct. 17, in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida against the defendants alleging that they failed to exercise standard care.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on Aug. 25, North Florida Shipyards Inc. owned a concrete dry dock permanently moored in the St. John's River when the bow of the defendant GLDD's barge 65, under the control of defendant Mobro's tugboats, collided with its dry dock. At the time of the collision, the dry dock was stationary while the barge and tugboats were in motion, thereby causing plaintiff damages estimated at $400,000 for repair and yet to be determined amounts for lost use, profits and revenue.

The plaintiff holds Mobro Marine Inc. and Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company LLC responsible because the defendants allegedly failed to provide a properly trained crew and failed to follow applicable safety guidelines and regulations.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment against defendants, damages plus interest, costs and any other relief the court deems just. They are represented by Ryan Eslinger of Milton, Leach, Whitman, D'Andrea & Eslinger PA in Jacksonville.
