Betsy Willis has taken legal action against her former landlords, alleging negligence that resulted in significant personal injuries. On April 16, 2025, Betsy Willis filed a complaint in the Circuit Court of the Sixth Judicial Circuit in Pinellas County, Florida, against Dar S. Hu and El Mico, LLC.
The lawsuit details two separate incidents that occurred at the property located at 3066 55th Ave. No., Lealman, Pinellas County, Florida. According to the complaint, from May 1, 2021, until May 1, 2023, Dar S. Hu owned the premises and was responsible for maintaining it in a safe condition. On October 30, 2022, Willis claims she suffered injuries due to a dangerous change in elevation within the home that Hu allegedly failed to address or warn about. The complaint asserts that Hu had a "non-delegable duty" to maintain safe conditions and comply with building codes but breached this duty by not remedying or warning about the hazardous stairway.
In another incident on July 21, 2023, after El Mico LLC took ownership of the property on May 1 of that year, Willis alleges further negligence concerning an unstable front stair leading into the home. The complaint accuses El Mico LLC of failing to repair or adequately warn about loose tiles and improperly constructed stairs that led to her fall and subsequent injuries. Willis contends both defendants had knowledge greater than hers regarding these dangers but neglected their duties to rectify them.
Willis is seeking compensatory damages exceeding $50,000 for each count against both defendants for her sustained injuries which include "bodily injuries and resulting pain and suffering," as well as other losses such as medical expenses and loss of earnings capacity. She demands a jury trial on all issues so triable.
