Global law firm Reed Smith welcomed Karl O. Riley as counsel in the firm’s Miami office. Riley joins the firm from Cozen O'Connor, where he previously served as that firm’s Las Vegas office managing partner.

“Karl has over a decade of experience working in the private and public sector,” said Francisco Rodriguez, a partner in Reed Smith's Global Commercial Disputes Group and the managing partner of its Miami office. “He has extensive experience as a commercial litigator and was a natural fit for our group, particularly for clients in the financial services and life sciences industries.”

Karl’s practice is focused on litigating breach of contract fraud, fraudulent transfer, negligence, breach of fiduciary duty, construction, wrongful disclosure, federal and state consumer protection, adverse proceedings, federal and state False Claims Act, deficiency judgments, receiverships, insurance coverage, judgment recovery and various employment and wage/hour issues.

“Karl’s extensive experience in global commercial disputes will be a valuable asset for our clients,” stated Casey Laffey, co-chair of Reed Smith’s Global Commercial Disputes Group. “Reed Smith has been strategically strengthening its disputes team in the U.S., most recently with the additions of Adam Massaro and Joyce Williams in the Denver office. Karl is an excellent addition to our growing team.”

“Reed Smith has a global network of resources that will be helpful to support my practice as I focus on expanding my practice nationally and globally,” said Riley. “I look forward to working with the firm’s clients and to bringing my experience to the table.”

Riley also brings significant community and leadership experience. He previously served as one of the first African-American chairs of the State Bar of Nevada’s Young Lawyers Section and was the first African-American to receive the State Bar of Nevada’s Young Lawyer of the Year Award. He has served on several national leadership positions with the National Bar Association (Young Lawyers division chair and Region IX director) and American Bar Association (Nevada young lawyer delegate to the ABA House of Delegates), and as an Alumni Executive Council member of the Leadership Council for Legal Diversity (LCLD). Karl is an active member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity.

Riley formerly served as a law clerk to the Honorable Johnnie B. Rawlinson in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit from August 2018 through August 2020.

He obtained his J.D. from Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law and his B.S.B.A from Washington University in St. Louis. He is licensed to practice in Florida and Miami.
