Back-to-back hurricanes Helene and Milton devastated the community surrounding Stetson University College of Law.

As Gulfport, the Pinellas beaches, and parts of St. Petersburg were particularly hard-hit, some Stetson Law students lost everything from laptops and textbooks to homes and vehicles.

One student reported losing virtually all of their belongings and remains displaced after the storms caused extensive damage to their home. Yet another said they lost all furniture, personal belongings, clothes, and shoes to flooding. Another said they lost two refrigerators’ worth of food due to two consecutive, prolonged power outages.

To support students affected by the storms, Stetson Law put out a call to action urging alumni and friends to contribute to its Student Emergency and Food Pantry funds – and the community responded generously. So far, Stetson Law has raised $30,000 for students in need of post-hurricane aid.

One such contributor is Susan B., whose son is a 2L and graduate of Stetson University in DeLand.

“Our son was not affected by hurricanes Helene or Milton, but he shared that many of his classmates were,” she said. “We just want to help his fellow students who were not as fortunate to recover from loss and damage so they can focus on their studies.”

The family’s contribution will greatly assist students as they work to rebuild their lives amid unprecedented circumstances.

While the amount of contributions so far is impressive, it pales in comparison to the needs of our impacted students.

Whether you have yet to give or would like to provide more than one gift, doing so is easy via the Stetson Law website. Simply visit our Giving Page and, under the drop-down menu titled “Designation,” select “College of Law Food Pantry” or “Student Emergency Fund Law School.”

The College of Law is incredibly grateful to all who have supported our students in the wake of two catastrophic weather events.
