Shocking allegations have emerged as a woman accuses a major coffee chain of negligence, resulting in severe injuries. Shrena McGarvey filed a complaint against Starbucks Corporation in the Circuit Court for the Sixth Judicial Circuit in Pinellas County, Florida, on October 17, 2024. The lawsuit alleges that Starbucks failed to secure a coffee lid properly, leading to McGarvey suffering burns from hot coffee.
According to the complaint, McGarvey was visiting a Starbucks location at 7398 Seminole Boulevard in Seminole, Florida, on January 19, 2024. As a business invitee using the drive-thru service, she received a cup of hot coffee with an improperly secured lid. This oversight resulted in serious and permanent injuries when the coffee spilled on her. The plaintiff argues that Starbucks Corporation breached its duty by not ensuring the safety of its customers through proper lid fastening and failing to warn them about potential dangers associated with unsecured lids.
The legal document details several accusations against Starbucks Corporation. It claims that the company either created or allowed a dangerous condition by using inadequate lid designs or failing to secure them properly. Furthermore, it accuses Starbucks of not providing adequate training to its employees regarding securing coffee lids and not warning customers about the risks involved. These failures are said to have existed long enough for Starbucks to be aware of them.
McGarvey is seeking damages exceeding $50,000 for bodily injury, physical pain and suffering, disability, inconvenience, disfigurement, mental anguish, loss of earnings capacity, and medical expenses both past and future. She demands a jury trial and seeks judgment against Starbucks Corporation within the jurisdictional limits of the court.
Representing Shrena McGarvey is attorney Christopher W. Waters from Pipas Law Group based in St. Petersburg, Florida. The case is presided over by judges from the Sixth Judicial Circuit under Case Number 24-004536-CI.
