A Florida woman says she tripped and injured herself on a Carnival Cruise Lines ship after she was startled by a cockroach in her stateroom.

Shaniqua Belmontes filed her lawsuit in federal court against Carnival Corporation, operating as Carnival Cruise Lines.

According to the complaint, Belmontes was on the Carnival Liberty cruise ship on January 17, 2023, when she saw the cockroach. She says the shock caused her to trip over a chair and hit a desk before falling to the ground.

Belmontes says she had no prior knowledge of insects in her room and accuses Carnival of negligence for failing to maintain sanitary conditions in its premises. She also claims the company failed to warn passengers about potential hazards they knew or should have known about.

As a result of the incident, Belmontes says she suffered bodily injury, mental anguish, loss of enjoyment of life, medical expenses, loss of earnings and loss of ability to earn money. She seeks economic and non-economic damages, pre- and post-judgment interests, court costs, attorney fees and other relief.

Belmontes is being represented by Alberto M. Lara of The Pendas Law Firm.
