Luis O'Naghten Joins Nelson Mullins as a Partner in Miami

International arbitrator and litigation attorney Luis O’Naghten joins Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP as partner in the Miami office where he will spearhead the firm’s growing international arbitration practice. O’Naghten adds significant experience as both party counsel and as an arbitrator, particularly in matters involving complex disputes in Latin America.

O’Naghten is past chair of the Miami International Arbitration Society (MIAS) and co-chairs MIAS’ Annual LatAm Investor-State Arbitration Conference. Fluent in both English and Spanish, O'Naghten has vast experience handling matters that fall under International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) rules, International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) rules, The Inter-American Commercial Arbitration Commission (IACAC) rules, American Arbitration Association/International Centre for Dispute Resolution (AAA/ICDR) rules. He continually represents the interest of foreign entities and states in complex, multi-million-dollar disputes in forums throughout the world.

At Nelson Mullins, O'Naghten will focus his legal practice primarily on energy, transportation, construction, telecom, infrastructure, international financial fraud, and corporate commercial litigation. He will also be heavily pursuing efforts in bringing Nelson Mullins into the global international arbitration conversation.

O'Naghten is consistently recognized for his arbitration practice in several noted international law directories and publications, including Chambers Latin America and Chambers Global guides; Who's Who Legal: Global Leaders; and The Legal 500 for both the United States and Latin America regions. He is sought for international speaking engagements and peer council as a leading voice in international arbitration and dispute resolution, particularly in Latin America and the United States.

O'Naghten received his Bachelor of Science degree in foreign service from Georgetown University in 1983, and his juris doctor from Columbia University School of Law in 1986. He also teaches a course on federal and state arbitration at the University of Miami School of Law, and a class on international arbitration at Universidad Panamericana in Mexico. He is also a coach of the annual University of Miami Moot Madrid international arbitration team.
