Man sues prison health care provider for lack of medical treatment

State Court
Prison

TALLAHASSEE - Ray Edward Cunningham, Jr. filed a complaint on September 8 in Leon County Circuit Court against the State of Florida, Department of Corrections and Centurion of Florida, LLC for violation of civil rights and negligence.

According to the complaint, Centurion is tasked with providing medical care for inmates in the Department's prison facilities and has a practice of denying or limiting service for the sake of enhancing the company's bottom line, which is shown in a number of multiple lawsuits that have been brought forth against the company, including one filed by the Human Rights Defense Center.

During Cunningham's time in corrections, he alleges that he too received the same lack of quality of care and correctional staff attempted to intimidate him from seeking further medical attention for difficulty breathing and pains throughout his body that made it difficult to walk. When he was finally able to be seen at the VA Medical Center, he was diagnosed with pneumonia, the suit says.

Cunningham seeks any relief the court deems acceptable, attorneys fees and cost of suit. Cunningham is represented by Jerry Girley.
