TAMPA - The owners/operators of the apartment complex at 2353 Mission Road in Tallahassee are being sued for negligence by a woman whose son was a tenant of the complex and was murdered on the premises in November 2020.

Latasha Mashburn filed suit Feb. 2 against HW Tally, LLC and Cherokee Hillwood, LLC for allegedly failing to protect her son, Jemel T. Jackson, from being a victim of a crime, given that the apartment complex was adjacent to high-crime areas.

The suit is also filed on behalf of Jackson's survivor, his almost-two-year-old child.

Mashburn filed suit for one count of negligence against HW Tally and one count of negligence against Cherokee Hillwood, for allegations that include failure to hire and train competent security guards, failure to provide adequately placed security camera and failure to implement overall security for the safety of the tenants. She is requesting damages in excess of $30,000 for each count.

A jury trial is demanded.

Mashburn is represented by Webster and Baptiste PLLC of Tallahassee.
