TAMPA - Civil charges were filed against Hillsborough County Public Schools on Feb. 10 by a former Joe E. Newsome High School student who was injured at a regularly scheduled but unsupervised softball practice in May 2019.

According to documents filed in Hillsborough County Circuit Court, McKayla Timmons was a junior who reported to a scheduled practice on May 10, where no coach or school employee supervision was present.

The unsupervised team organized as best it could to practice and run drills, and one of the teammates instructed the team to begin drills in the outfield, the suit says.

Timmons, who regularly played in the infield for the team, was running to catch a fly ball and tripped due to her unfamiliarity with the outfield, the suit says.

As a result, the plaintiff severely injured her wrist, the suit says.

Timmons is suing the school district for one count of negligence, seeking damages for her medical expenses and loss of quality of life exceeding $30,000.

The plaintiff is represented by the Florida Law Group of Tampa.
