TALLAHASSEE -- Since taking office Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' (R) has reshaped the state Supreme Court into a conservative court.
David Hart, executive vice president of government and political relations at the Florida Chamber of Commerce, noted what the governor’s changes mean for the state of Florida.
“One of his first actions was making three new appointments to the Florida Supreme Court, and this was definitely a game changer at the state level if you look at some of the actions of the new court, two already have been extraordinarily beneficial,” Hart told the Florida Record. “One of their first actions was overturning the previous court in a decision to take up on appeal a case dealing with Miami Beach’s minimum wage ordinance.”
The Florida Chamber of Commerce, Hart said, had filed a lawsuit over the ordinance on constitutional grounds, which two lower courts upheld. “When the new justices that Gov. DeSantis appointed were seated and sworn in, the court reversed the decision and, by doing so, upheld the opinion of the lower courts,” he said.
