CLEARWATER — A son is suing Lakeland health care providers, alleging negligence and wrongful death.

Keegan Sweeney, as personal representative of the estate of his father, Michael Sweeney, filed a complaint Dec. 21 in Pinellas County Circuit Court against Baycare Health System, Car Ride Inc., et al, alleging failure to provide a safe transport for their clients.

According to the complaint, on Sept. 14, 2017, Michael Sweeney died as a result of and complications from the injuries he sustained due to the negligence of defendants. On July 27, 2017, the suit says, the defendants allowed Sweeney to fall to the ground after he rolled off a curb in his wheelchair while waiting to be driven from the St. Petersburg Kidney Center to his home.

The plaintiff alleges the defendants, working for Car Ride and hired by Baycare Health System, failed to take control of the decedent's wheelchair while assisting him in entering the transport van and negligently allowed him to operate his wheelchair alone.

Keegan Sweeney seeks trial by jury, damages of more than $15,000, exclusive of interest, court costs and attorney fees, plus all other proper and appropriate relief. He is represented by attorney Stephen A. Barnes of Tampa.
