Holland & Knight issued the following announcement on Dec. 5.
Holland & Knight was named the winner of the Regional Litigation Department of the Year award for Florida at The American Lawyer Industry Awards, held on December 5 in New York City. The American Lawyer Industry Awards, the magazine's signature annual event, honors outstanding achievements in the legal profession.
The firm was recognized for the strength, reputation and impressive record of its litigation practice in Florida. Holland & Knight's Florida litigators successfully handled numerous matters for clients in 2017 and 2018, showcasing their strengths in disputes involving Latin America, jury trials, and other high-stakes business disputes.
Holland & Knight secured a $23 million result for the estate of Subway's founder in a real estate dispute, protected the Dominican Republic's water resources agency from a $35 million breach of contract suit, and defended Nicklaus Children's Hospital and a group of physicians against claims that they tried to build a hospital empire at the expense of independent physician groups. The firm also defended Norwegian Cruise Lines and its CEO in a $90 million defamation suit, and secured better treatment for mentally ill inmates incarcerated by the Florida Department of Corrections.
"Over the course of decades, Holland & Knight has established a long history of handling some of the most important cases in Florida," said Christopher G. Kelly, chair of the firm's Litigation Section. "Clients come to us today with matters across all parts of that state because of our well-earned reputation for excellence, efficiency and effectiveness.
"As survey after survey has shown, and now The American Lawyer has confirmed, our Florida practice is among the most significant statewide practices in the nation," he continued. "Gifted, talented and dedicated, the lawyers who earned the firm this honor are a credit to Holland & Knight as well as its clients."
