Patient accuses surgical facility, physician of negligence

Medical malpractice 08

CLEARWATER — A Seminole patient is suing an orthopedic facility and physician, alleging medical negligence.

Candi Buzza filed a complaint Feb. 7 in Pinellas County Circuit Court against Dr. Stephen Wood, doing business as Suncoast Orthopedics, alleging failure to provide medical and other care recognized and appropriate by reasonably prudent similar heath care providers.

According to the complaint, sometime in 2015, after experiencing chronic left knee pain, Buzza went to the defendants for total replacement of the left knee. Buzza says the procedure was not successful because the implants placed by the defendants were loose and there was no cement adherent to the undersurface of the implant, as commented on by another surgeon.

The plaintiff alleges the defendants failed to prepare a pre-operative plan for the knee replacement surgery that addresses the pre-existing hardware within the knee and failed to remove the pre-existing screws during Buzza's knee replacement.

Buzza seeks trial by jury, damages in excess of $15,000, pre-judgment interest for any out of pocket pecuniary losses, court costs, and all relief the court deems appropriate. She is represented by attorney Scott Distasio of Distasio Law Firm in Tampa.
