MIAMI – An African-American woman alleges racial discrimination was a factor in her termination from her position as a detention officer.

Tamika Ferguson filed a complaint on Sept. 23 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida against Akima Global Services LLC alleging discrimination.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on July 1, 2014, she started working for defendant as a detention officer, however, throughout her employment she was subjected to discriminatory treatment by other non-black agents. The suit states that while under Family and Medical Leave Act leave due to her pregnancy, shenotified defendant that she was advised by her doctor that she was not ready to work yet. Consequently, defendant terminated her employment allegedly for being under doctor's care and was deemed as unfit for the job. She alleges two other similarly situated Hispanic employees were not terminated.

The plaintiff holds Akima Global Services LLC responsible because the defendant allegedly failed to uphold plaintiff's rights to medical leave and failed to uphold rights of plaintiff as a protected class.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks relief against defendant, award back pay, benefits' adjustment, interest, damages, reinstatement or award front pay, costs of action, attorney's fees and other relief as the court deems just. She is represented by Anthony M. Georges-Pierre of Remer & Georges-Pierre PLLC in Miami.
