MIAMI — A former office clerk has filed a class-action lawsuit against a coffee shop for alleged unpaid wages and retaliation resulting in being fired when she complained about the unpaid wages.

Yayset Varona filed a complaint on behalf of herself and other similarly situated individuals on Aug. 31 in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, Miami Division, against Godiva American, Corp., doing business as Santa Fe News and Espresso, and Alejandro Scolnik, alleging that they failed to fairly compensate the plaintiff for all of the hours she worked.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that between Nov. 23, 2015, and July 8, 2016, she worked for more than 40 hours without being paid any overtime compensation. The plaintiff holds Godiva American Corp. and Alejandro Scolnik responsible because the defendants allegedly terminated the plaintiff's employment as retaliation for complaining about not being paid any overtime wages.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks compensatory damages, liquidated damages in an equal amount, back pay and other benefits wrongly denied, all legal fees and any other relief as the court deems appropriate. She is represented by Zandro E. Palma of Zandro E. Palma P.A. in Miami.
