Woman alleges debt collector's fee is unlawful

WEST PALM BEACH – A Broward County woman alleges that a Dallas debt collector unlawfully charged a fee for making online payments.

Stacy Palma filed a complaint on March 16 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida against Credence Resource Management LLC, citing violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that Credence Resource Management LLC was charging a mandatory fee of $5 as a convenience fee for online payments made toward a debt. The suit states this is a violation of the FDCPA.

The plaintiff seeks the following: compensation for statutory and actual damages; attorneys’ fees and costs; and any further relief that the court may deem appropriate and just under the circumstances.
