Minor with eating disorder sues insurer

Lawsuit

MIAMI — A minor child in Florida who was a covered dependent of a Sentry Data Systems employee is suing an insurance company, claiming the insurer improperly denied payment for some elements of care targeting her eating disorder.

Cara Z. sued CIGNA Health and Life Insurance Company on March 8 in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, alleging violation of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act.

The plaintiff alleges that CIGNA has denied coverage for the level of care she required and has failed to provide reasonable explanations for the denial.

The plaintiff seeks a mandatory Injunction and declaration requiring defendant to immediately qualify her for mental health treatment benefits, compensation for all past benefits due, pre-judgment and post-judgment interest and attorneys’ fees and costs, and any further relief that the court may deem just and proper. She is represented by Alicia Paulino-Grisham and Maggie M. Smith of DI Law Group in Hollywood.
