MIAMI – A government agency is suing a cigar manufacturer over an allegedly unpaid balance.
The United States of America filed a complaint on Feb. 8 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida against American Cigarette Co. Inc., alleging that the cigar manufacturer knowingly violated the Fair and Equitable Tobacco Reform Act.
According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that the defendant entered seven promissory notes to pay its imposed assessments from 2007 to 2012, but has not paid in full. The complaint states that the outstanding balance, including interest, is $2,377,218.52. The plaintiff holds American Cigarette Co. Inc. responsible because the defendant allegedly failed to comply with the payment terms.
The plaintiff seeks payment of the outstanding and delinquent amounts owed, plus interest and any additional relief that the court deems just. It is represented by Jean-Michel Voltaire of U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.
