Publix shopper says he was victim of racial discrimination

Federal Court
Publix

A Black man says he was a victim of racial discrimination while shopping at Publix in Ocala.

Adrian Clark filed his complaint in federal court against Publix Super Markets Inc.

According to the complaint, Clark and his spouse visited the store June 21, 2023, to buy two money orders totaling $15,832. But Clark claims he was subjected to discriminatory treatment when he attempted to purchase the money orders.

Despite having confirmed over the phone that this would be possible, Clark says he and his spouse were told by an unnamed female employee in the store that each money order could only amount to $10,000. Clark agreed to get two separate money orders.

But Clark says another employee named Eva began questioning him about where he got the money and why he needed such a large amount. After explaining he recently had won a lawsuit and needed to pay for an apartment lease due to his credit score and loss of income, Eva allegedly said they couldn't process his request because they didn't "feel comfortable doing this for you people."

Clark seeks compensatory damages.
