A former employee has filed a discrimination lawsuit against Waste Management.
Willie Humphrey filed his complaint in federal court against Waste Management Inc. of Florida alleging violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Florida Civil Rights Act, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Family and Medical Leave Act.
According to the complaint, Humphrey says he was approved for intermittent leave under FMLA due to a workplace injury in 2020, but he says he was often forced to work and threatened with accusations of refusal to work. Upon his return from leave, Humphrey alleges retaliation from Waste Management, including micromanagement and pressure to stop exercising his rights under FMLA.
The complaint also includes allegations of racial discrimination. Humphrey, who is Black, claims his supervisor made racist comments and said all Black employees look the same. He further alleges he was prevented from advancing within the company due to his race.
