Former Sanibel police officer files discrimination suit against city

Federal Court
O judge

judge gavel 1280

A former Sanibel police officer has filed a discrimination lawsuit against the city.

Cari Buckowich filed her lawsuit in federal court against the City of Sanibel.

According to the complaint, the city failed to provide separate locker rooms for male and female officers, forcing Buckowich to dress in front of her male colleagues. Buckowich says she was subjected to gender discrimination and retaliation during her tenure as a Sanibel police officer.

Furthermore, Buckowich alleges she was sexually harassed by fellow officer Kory McCloughan. Despite repeated complaints about his behavior, Buckowich alleges the harassment continued unabated. Buckowich initially confided in a coworker about the offensive conduct and expressed concerns about potential repercussions if she made a formal complaint.
