South Florida Walgreens pharmacists alleges race discrimination

Federal Court

MIAMI — A Black pharmacist alleges she suffered race discrimination while working for Walgreens.

Deatrick Givens filed a complaint Oct. 13 in federal court against Walgreen Co., alleging race discrimination and other claims.

According to her complaint, Givens was a pharmacist with Walgreens for more than 29 years. In August 2021, the Walgreens pharmacy she had been assigned to closed, and Givens says Walgreens delayed placing her another staff pharmacist position. She further claims the company had her floating between 10 stores more months and having to drive significant distances.

Givens alleges that once placed in a store, she suffered discrimination from the store manager who was White and was wrongfully terminated for displaying an outburst. In addition, she claims around the same time, a White male staff pharmacist who had an outburst and knocked over controlled substances at a South Florida store, was not terminated.  Givens, according to her complaint, received a right to sue from the EEOC in August of 2023.

Givens seeks monetary relief of more than $75,000, interest, trial by jury and all other just relief. She is represented by Leslie Holland of The Law Office of Leslie Holland in North Miami Beach.
