Second District Court of Appeal Chief Judge Daniel H. Sleet recently announced that the design process for the DCA’s new courthouse in St. Petersburg is in the final stages and that the site and foundation work is beginning.
“We want to thank Florida’s Department of Management Services, our architect, the construction team, and the City of St. Petersburg for collaborating on this project,” Sleet said in a post to the Second DCA’s Facebook page. “We look forward to keeping the community informed about our progress.
The Legislature appropriated $50 million for the new courthouse in 2021 and another $9 million last session. The building will bare the name of the late State Attorney Bernie McCabe. McCabe passed away in January 2021 after 48 years of service to the people of Pinellas and Pasco counties. His passing marked the end of a career of service that dated back to 1972.
McCabe was one of the first state attorneys in Florida to start a Drug Treatment Court and the first to create a Veterans Treatment Court.
