Lewis Brisbois Bolsters Commercial Litigation Capabilities With New Partner Hire

Lewis Brisbois is pleased to welcome Jay Thornton to its Fort Lauderdale office as a partner in the firm’s Complex Business & Commercial Litigation, Corporate, Banking & Finance, and Labor & Employment practices. Mr. Thornton has been litigating complex banking, labor & employment, and general commercial litigation matters for 23 years, and has successful first chair jury and non-jury trial experience in the state and federal courts on behalf of numerous institutional clients nationwide. 

Mr. Thornton, along with associate Max Palenzuela, brings a vibrant growing practice and has extensive capabilities across multiple disciplines, including complex banking litigation, class actions, retail bank operations, and wire and check processing claims. He has worked on cases involving the Fair Credit Billing Act and Fair Debt Collection Practices Act claims, real estate litigation, mortgage fraud, title insurance disputes, fraudulent transfer act claims, commercial loan workouts and foreclosures, and deceptive and unfair trade practices.

During his career, Mr. Thornton has also handled right of publicity actions, defamation, civil theft, unlawful interference with business relationships, civil fraud and all other business torts, and the defense of accessibility discrimination claims under Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act. 

In discussing Mr. Thornton’s arrival to Lewis Brisbois, Fort Lauderdale Managing Partner Michael G. Platner, chair of Lewis Brisbois’ National Corporate Practice and co-chair of the Securities & Corporate Finance Practice, said, “We are fortunate to add Jay to our Florida and National teams and his unique and extensive experience as we continue to build a world class commercial practice with national coverage.

Mr. Thornton also has successful first chair jury trials experience in an array of employment litigation matters, including the defense of race, age, gender, sex, pregnancy, religious, and disability discrimination, sexual harassment, hostile work environment, and retaliation charges and claims under Title VII, the Florida Civil Rights Act, and the Family Medical Leave Act. He has prosecuted and defended multiple trade secret misappropriation claims and related actions to enforce noncompetition agreements and other restrictive covenants, and has handled many preliminary injunction proceedings for such matters in the state and federal courts on an expedited basis. 

Mr. Thornton earned his law degree from Emory University School of Law and his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee. He is admitted to practice in Florida and the District of Columbia.
