Prison

TALLAHASSEE - A former inmate is suing for allegedly not getting protection when threatened and being stabbed while in prison.

Rufus Lee Adams, III filed a lawsuit on Dec. 23 in the Leon County District Court against the Florida Department of Corrections for common law negligence and negligent training.

According to the lawsuit, on Dec. 26, 2017, Adams was an inmate in one of the defendant's prisons when another inmate threatened to stab him if he refused to follow orders of stabbing another inmate. Adams told the defendant that he was a "marked man" if he did not agree to the demand, the suit says.

Adams interviewed for protection, sent in multiple forms of request and was denied his request, the suit says. On Feb. 9, 2018, Adams was stabbed at least four times by multiple gang members, the suit says.

Adams seeks damages, permanent enjoinment of Defendant from further violation of state and federal laws, attorney's fees and costs. Adams is represented by Marie A. Mattox of Tallahassee.
