Nelson Mullins Wins Florida Litigation Department of the Year Award

Award

Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP issued the following announcement on Dec. 3.

Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP won the American Lawyer’s Regional Litigation Department of the Year – Florida.

The firm was honored Thursday night at the fourth annual American Lawyer’s Industry Awards in New York City.

“We are grateful for the honor and appreciate The American Lawyer’s recognition of our colleagues’ efforts for our clients and our community,” said Mark F. Raymond, managing partner of Nelson Mullins’ Miami office.

Raymond was joined by Orlando Litigation Partner Todd K. Norman and Tallahassee Office Managing Partner Ginger Barry Boyd, all of whom represented the firm at the event.

Boies Schiller Flexner LLP was named the finalist for the Florida litigation award.

Other regional litigation department winners are: Latham & Watkins (California), Greenberg Traurig (Georgia), Cozen O’Connor (Pennsylvania), and Jones Day (Texas). In October, the American Lawyer named 15 regional finalists in five states where ALM Media publishes its legal newspapers.

Raychel Lean, editor-in-chief of the Daily Business Review, ALM’s legal paper in Florida, said that clients call on Nelson Mullins to represent them in major product liability and healthcare litigation matters.

For example, after more than five years of litigation, Nelson Mullins in February successfully persuaded Florida’s Second District Court of Appeal to uphold an earlier defense verdict for its client, Physicians Regional Healthcare System, which terminated the privileges of an OB/GYN after two patients of her died in childbirth, and she sued following her termination.

The firm’s winning nomination featured a diverse array of cases, from successfully defending a concrete manufacturer against claims in the Florida International University bridge collapse to defeating a putative securities class action against Carnival Corp., which alleged it mishandled its response to the COVID-19 outbreak, to offering access to legal services to unaccompanied minors, who are being detained in adult centers run by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in South Florida -- and suing for the teens' release to sponsors such as relatives and friends.

This litigation award is Nelson Mullins’ second major litigation award this year. In August, Nelson Mullins won Law360’s Florida Powerhouses Award. According to the publication, the firm demonstrated strong showings over the past year, including in real estate, health care and refinancings that saved regional expressway authorities millions of dollars.
