TALLAHASSEE -- A woman is suing her former employers for sex/gender discrimination.

Alison Abernathy filed a complaint on September 14 in Leon County Circuit Court against the Florida Department of State for sex/gender discrimination.

According to the complaint, Abernathy began her employment for the Florida Department of State on July 18, 2011, as a Volunteer Manager until her termination on Sept. 22, 2017. Abernathy alleges that the discrimination came from Trampas Alderman, supervisor, and Johnathon Sheppard, Director of Mission San Luis, both white males.

Abernathy alleges that Alderman accused her of being late and taking breaks and berated her for refusing to engage with him in confrontation. On July 10, 2015, Abernathy alleges that she was accused of personnel issues and reprimanded that was followed up on July 20, 2015, with a final written warning for poor performance and violation of agency rules for timesheet inaccuracies and inappropriate internet usage. On Sept. 18, 2017, Sheppard recommended her for dismissal and she was terminated four days later.

Abernathy seeks interest, compensatory damages, general damages, punitive damages and other relief the court sees fit. Abernathy is represented by Marie A. Mattox.
