Amazon Web Services identified in data breach and theft lawsuit originating from Fort Myers

Federal Court
Databreach

FORT MYERS - A local mental health and substance abuse nonprofit accused Amazon Web Services, Inc. of possessing stolen confidential information in Fort Myers federal court.

According to documents filed on March 23, plaintiff SalusCare, Inc. found after its computer network was running slowly that its database had been breached by data storage buckets owned and managed by the defendant John Doe based out of Ukraine.

The lawsuit says that the nonprofit has no business in Ukraine, meaning that there is no possible legitimate or non-fraudulent explanation for why its data would end up overseas.

The plaintiff complains that it has spent more than $12,000 in investigating the breach, and that Amazon has been negligent in informing the plaintiff of how long the data will be locked to prevent further damage.

Amazon and the unidentified storage bucket owner are sued with violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, violating the Computer Abuse and Recovery Act and injunction.

The plaintiff is represented by J. Tom Smoot III PA of Fort Myers.
