TALLAHASSEE — Miami attorney Sonia Yvette Amador has been indefinitely suspended following a Dec. 26 Florida Supreme Court order for allegedly failing to cooperate in a official inquiry, according to a recent announcement by the Florida Bar.
"Amador was found in contempt for noncompliance," the state bar said in its Jan. 31 announcement of the discipline and the Supreme Court's order. "She failed to respond to official Bar inquiries regarding complaints."
In its two-page order, the high court granted a state bar petition for contempt and order to show cause and held Amador in contempt.
Amador's suspension was effective 30 days from the date of the court's order to allow her time to close out his practice and protect his existing clients' interests, according to the court's order.
"In addition, [Amador] shall accept no new business from the date this order is filed until she is reinstated," the order said. "Once the suspension takes effect, [Amador] shall remain suspended until further order of this Court."
Florida court orders are not final until time to file a rehearing motion expires. Filing such a motion does not alter the effective date of Amador's suspension
The high court also ordered Amador to pay $1,250 in costs.
Amador was admitted to the bar in Florida on Sept. 26, 2006, according to her profile at the state bar website. No prior discipline before the state bar is listed on Amador's state bar profile.
A state bar grievance committee found Amador in non-compliance after she failed to respond to official state bar inquiries, according to the state bar's petition.
Neither the state bar's petition nor the Supreme Court's order provide information about the inquiries.
After the state bar filed its petition with the Supreme Court, the court issued an order to show cause but Amador also failed to respond to that order, according to the court's suspension order.
