Pretrial detainee accuses Pinellas Sheriff's Office of civil rights violations

CLEARWATER — A Pinellas County man is suing the county sheriff's office, alleging excessive use of force.

Christopher Nickerson filed a complaint Oct. 29 in Pinellas Circuit Court against the a Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, alleging violation of the Fourth and 14th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution.

According to the complaint, on April 18, Nickerson was arrested by the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office for disorderly conduct and obstructing or resisting an officer without violence. Nickerson alleges the defendant handcuffed him so tightly that the circulation of his blood was restricted and then placed him in a room that was freezing cold, made him strip naked and provided him with only a paper gown.

Nickerson seeks trial by jury, an order requiring the defendant to provides the names and photographs of all of its employees on duty that date in the jail holding cell and the post-booking holding areas. He is represented by attorney Kevin J. Darken of Kevin J. Darken Law Group LLC in Tampa.
