CLEARWATER — A  Largo couple is suing a Florida insurer for at least $15,000, alleging that the company failed to cover storm damage to their home from Hurricane Irma in 2017.

Luis and Waleska Betancourt filed the lawsuit against American Security Insurance Co. July 11 in Pinellas Circuit Court, alleging that the insurer failed to pay for repairs to their property. The couple is claiming breach of contract for damages due to wind, wind-driven rain and hail, according to the lawsuit.

The Betancourts claim that their insurance policy was in effect on Sept. 11, 2017, when their single-family home, at 9273 86th Ave., sustained a "covered loss" from the storm, according to the lawsuit. The couple said that they filed a claim, were assigned a claim number, and that the property was inspected.

The plaintiffs hold American Security Insurance Co. responsible, according to the filing, because the defendant allegedly failed to "adequately indemnify plaintiffs for the loss."

The couple is represented by Louis A. Gonzalez and Zaf G. Goss of Winter Park.
