CLEARWATER — A Hispanic employee is suing Pinellas County businesses, alleging racial discrimination.

Mayra Umanzor filed a complaint Feb. 14 in Pinellas County Circuit Court against Richman Property Services Inc. and The Richman Group Inc., alleging violation of the Florida Civil Rights Act (FCRA) under race discrimination.

According to the complaint, on June 6, 2016, after being promoted to senior property manager, Umanzor was overheard speaking in Spanish numerous times with other Richman employees. The suit says, soon after, Umanzo experienced a drastic change of treatment among other Richman employees and began having alleged issues with her work despite having a very good performance history.

As a result, Umanzor said she had no choice but to leave her employment because the workplace had become a hostile environment that was no longer an emotionally safe place for her.

The plaintiff alleges the defendants engaged in unlawful employment practices and discriminated against an employee on account of her race, in violation of the FCRA.

Umanzor seeks trial by jury, front and back pay, benefits, prejudgment interest, compensatory and punitive damages of at least $15,000, attorney fees, court costs, and all other relief the court deems just and equitable. She is represented by attorneys Christopher D. Gray, Wolfgang M. Florin and Robin M. Orosz of Florin Gray Bouzas Owens LLC in Lutz, Florida.
