CLEARWATER — A St. Petersburg man is suing the county school board, an employer, alleging age discrimination.
John Mavros filed a complaint Sept. 25 in Pinellas County Circuit Court against the Pinellas County School Board alleging breach of of good faith and fair dealing.
According to the complaint, since September 2014, Mavros, 68, has suffered monetary, emotional and psychological damages as a result of the defendant's malicious indifference to his protected rights by withdrawing an earlier recommendation for a vacant guidance counselor position at John Hopkins Middle School. The suit says the decision was unlawfully biased on account of Mavros' age.
The plaintiff alleges the school board bypassed the more-qualified Mavros in favor of a less-qualified but substantially younger candidate, and interfered with Mavros' rights to enjoy the same career advancement as other employees.
Mavros seeks trial by jury, compensatory damages of more than $15,000, interest, costs of action and attorney fees. He is represented by attorney Ronald L. Nelson of St. Petersburg.
