CLEARWATER — A policy holder is suing an insurer, alleging breach of contract and negligence.

Silvia Abdulshafi filed a complaint Sept. 19 in Pinellas Circuit Court against Health Options Inc., doing business as Florida Blue, alleging the insurer breached its duty of good faith and fair dealing.

According to the complaint, on Nov. 11, 2016, Abdulshafi re-enrolled for the same insurance plan/coverage she previously hadcarried under Florida Blue but was was never notified that she should pay any amount other than the $20.42 previously required.

The suit says when Abdulshafi used the insurance policy to pick up a prescription and receive an ultrasound in preparation for an upcoming kidney surgery, she was denied coverage.

The plaintiff alleges Florida Blue failed to inform her of the changes in her insurance premiums, and caused a delay to the plaintiff's surgery.

Abdulshafi seeks trial by jury, damages of more $15,000, plus court costs, interest on all liquidated sums and attorney fees. She is represented by attorney Geoff S. Stahl of Liggio Law PA in West Palm Beach,.
