Patient takes podiatric physician to court over deep vein thrombosis

Medical malpractice 07

FORT LAUDERDALE — A man is suing Michael Rivera DPM, a podiatric physician, for alleged negligence.

Nicholas Verga filed a complaint on June 8 in the Broward County Circuit Court, alleging that the defendant failed to provide the standard of care and skill required of medical providers.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that he developed a large deep vein thrombosis on June 9, 2015 that required emergency treatment, therapy and surgeries as a result of the alleged negligence of the defendant to provide appropriate treatment to the plaintiff's ankle sprain injury.

The plaintiff holds the defendant responsible for allegedly failing to advise the patient of the risks associated with the injury, allowing unqualified personnel to medically advise the patient and for failing to refer the patient to another physician.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment against the defendant for compensatory damages, costs, interest and other sums deemed proper. He is represented by Richard P. Hermann of Shapiro, Blasi, Wasserman & Hermann PA in Boca Raton.
