REED SMITH LLP: Reed Smith Partner, Team Recognized by Legal 500 Latin America

Award

Reed Smith LLP issued the following announcement on Sept. 12.

The rankings highlight practice area teams that “provide the most cutting-edge and innovative advice to corporate counsel.”

Miami partner José Astigarraga was named a Leading Lawyer for his international arbitration work, repeating last year’s top ranking.

Legal 500 praised Astigarraga as “always prepared to provide the necessary legal support [to his clients] and in absolute control on the subject matter,” alluding to his “extraordinary performance at arbitration hearings.” He joined Reed Smith in April 2017.

The firm earned a Tier 3 recommendation (out of 5) in the International Arbitration practice area, which maintains last year’s ranking.

The Legal 500 called Reed Smith's experience “truly remarkable, with outstanding results.” The firm's recent caseload features a $1.3-billion dispute against a state entity for breach of a contract to construct energy facilities, a $200-million shareholder dispute, a multimillion-dollar construction dispute, and a $1-billion dispute against a state entity for breach of a contract involving petrochemicals.

Clients recommended four other Reed Smith lawyers: partner Cristina Cárdenas, counsel Eduardo De la Peña, Miami office managing partner Edward Mullins, and senior associate Sujey Herrera.

Legal 500 said De la Peña “deeply understands the main principles connected with the Latin American legal systems,” and Cristina Cárdenas is “exceptional in tasks and extraordinarily obsessed with the details.”

Reed Smith is also profiled in the publication’s City Focus on Miami, saying: “The team has a fine record in commercial and investor-state arbitration, and covers a range of sectors, including telecoms, construction and infrastructure, and oil and gas.”
