Unum Life Insurance Co. of American allegedly denied woman's long-term disability benefits

Insurance 03

TAMPA — A woman has filed suit against a life insurance company for allegedly refusing to pay long-term disability benefits.

Karen White filed a complaint Sept. 12 in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, Tampa Division, against Unum Life Insurance Co. of America, alleging that the Insurance firm wrongfully denied the plaintiff's claim for disability benefits.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that in December 2014, she became disabled and was initially being paid disability benefits until they were terminated. The plaintiff holds Unum Life Insurance Co. of America responsible because the defendant allegedly denied further payment to the plaintiff for disability benefits despite still being disabled according to the terms of the plan.

The plaintiff seeks a declaration of her rights to benefits from Jan. 1, 2015, to the present, all legal fees and any other relief as the court deems just. She is represented by Nancy L. Cavey of Law Offices of Nancy L. Cavey in St. Petersburg.
