FORT LAUDERDALE — A Broward County woman is suing her former employer, alleging retaliation and wrongful termination.

Sherrice Charles filed a complaint July 30 in Broward County Circuit Court against Florida Home-Improvement Associates Inc., alleging violation of the Florida's Private Sector Whistleblower's Act.

According to the complaint, on April 3, one day after she began work as a scheduler,  Charles complained to her supervisor about the defendant's conduct of running credit checks on its customers without their authorization or consent, and requested to be transferred to another department.

Shortly thereafter, Charles said, she was terminated as retaliation for her complaints and her unwillingness to participate in such endeavors.

The plaintiff alleges Florida Home-Improvement Associates failed to comply with Florida law by terminating her after she reported illegal conduct and her refusal to participate in the illegal activity.

Charles seeks trial by jury, damages of more than $15,000, permanent injunction, reinstatement of full fringe benefits, prejudgment interest and any other compensation allowed by law. She is represented by attorneys Peter M. Hoogerwoerd, Nathaly Lewis and Mark Berrios-Ayala of Remer & Georges-Pierre, PLLC in Miami.
