Patient alleges medication prescribed by West Central Gastroenterology caused organ damage

Medical malpractice 06

CLEARWATER – A Pinellas County man alleges that his kidneys were damaged as a result of medication prescribed to him.

Justin Schlau filed a complaint on May 23 in the 6th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida Pinellas County against Laurence Zeitlin, M.D. and West Central Gastroenterology LLP alleging medical malpractice.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on Dec. 16, 2015, plaintiff was admitted to Mease Countryside Hospital with acute renal failure, kidney injury and other kidney-related complications. The plaintiff claims complications were due to medications prescribed to him by the defendants for his diagnosis of ulcerative colitis.

The plaintiff holds Zeitlin and West Central Gastroenterology LLP responsible because the defendants allegedly failed to appropriately monitor plaintiff's kidney function, failed to immediately discontinue medications that causes kidney damage and failed to refer plaintiff to a nephrologist when plaintiff's laboratory results demonstrated abnormal kidney function.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment of more than $15,000 for all damages incurred and any other relief that the court deems just and proper. He is represented by Jose L. Estrada of Maney and Gordon PA in Tampa.
