MIAMI – A Cigna Corp. employee alleges she was wrongfully terminated from receiving disability benefits.

Chernequa Dawson filed a complaint on Aug. 15 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida against Cigna Corp. and Life Insurance Co. of North America alleging violation of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that in July 2014, she became disabled and applied for disability benefits, which were initially approved but then suddenly terminated in October 2014. The plaintiff holds Cigna Corp. and Life Insurance Co. of North America responsible because the defendants allegedly terminated and upheld their decision to deny further benefits to plaintiff despite being disabled according to the terms of the plan.

The plaintiff seeks payment of disability benefits, reinstatement to the plan and to continue to receive disability benefits for as long as she remains disabled, all legal fees and interest and any other relief as the court deems just. She is represented by Alexander A. Palamara and Gregory Michael Dell of Attorneys Dell and Schaefer Chartered in Hollywood.
