Eastgate Tobacco Co. sued for allegedly unpaid assessment

MIAMI – The federal government is suing a tobacco company over allegations of an unpaid balance.

United States of America filed a complaint on Feb. 8 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida against Eastgate Tobacco Co., alleging that the cigarette manufacturer knowingly violated the Fair and Equitable Tobacco Reform Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that it has not received payments for the defendant's quarterly assessments. According to the suit, Eastgate owes $1,109,842.99 as of Nov. 30, 2015.

The plaintiff seeks the following: compensation for outstanding and delinquent amounts owed, plus interest and any additional relief that the court deems just. He is represented by Jean-Michel Voltaire of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.
